Language Arts
Students continued to practice chunking harder words. Students also practiced identifying where they should chunk a word to help them read the word. For example, for the word 'clap', we could chunk it 'c- lap' or 'cl-ap'. We discussed the differences and which way students preferred to chunk it. We said that 'cl-ap' would be easier based on how it sounded. Students then used their ability to chunk to spell harder words. They were challenged to spell the word 'gravitational' by stretching out the word and thinking about each part they hear as separate chunks. So chunking helps students read harder words but also spell harder words more successfully. Students also retold a story they heard by writing the beginning, middle, and end important events.
Math
For fraction study, students thought about the tidal zones. They noticed that the tidal zones were divided into four parts. Students worked on dividing shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths. Students used colored tiles, strips of colored paper, and their own created shapes to divide into equal parts.
