Language Arts
Students continued to practice applying their vowel pattern knowledge as they worked through sorts and word games in partners. Students were practicing to distinguish between short and long vowel words by observing the number of vowels in a word. They also looked at picture clues to sort words to help differentiate which vowel would make better sense. Students also learned about ending sounds, called suffixes. Students learned that adding an -s to a word can change the meaning from singular (one) to plural (more than one). Students also learned about adding the letters -ed to mean 'in the past' and -ing to mean 'in the present'. We also talked about the r-controlled words that have the special sounds and letters: 'ar, or, er/ir/ur'. Students learned that the 'ar' sound is similar to a sound a pirate makes; like in words- star, park, art.
For reading comprehension, students heard the story 'Happy Birthday Moon' and 'Mooncake' by Frank Asch. They were asked to focus on the story elements (character, setting, problem, and solution) to help them comprehend the stories better. After hearing the story read aloud, students discussed the story elements and then wrote about them. This helped them to stretch their memory of the important events in the story.

Math
Students continued to learn about fractions through the tidepool project. Students transferred their fraction learning with pattern blocks to then using an image of a tidepool animal and dividing it into a fraction number of their choice. Students were challenged to divide the image into equal parts without making one part bigger or smaller than the others. Students also used various shells to count by twos and to sort/tally/graph by color and type of shell.
